Volunteer Firefighter

The Forks Township Fire Department is proud to serve a growing and vibrant community, and we are always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team. As a Volunteer Firefighter, you will play a critical role in protecting life and property while supporting a tradition of excellence that dates back to 1945.

Volunteer firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies, including fires, rescues, medical incidents, hazardous materials situations, and public service calls. Members operate within established department policies and work under the supervision of trained officers as part of a highly skilled and coordinated team.

Roles and Responsibilities

Volunteer Firefighters are expected to actively support all aspects of department operations, including:

  • Emergency response to fire, rescue, and medical incidents
  • Participation in training, drills, and continuing education
  • Operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment
  • Community outreach, fire prevention, and public education
  • Attendance at department meetings and organizational events

Members may perform physically demanding tasks such as advancing hose lines, operating pumps, raising ladders, conducting search and rescue, and providing emergency medical care.

Training Commitment

To ensure operational readiness and safety, members are required to:

  • Attend weekly training sessions (Monday evenings)
  • Participate in a monthly business meeting (third Monday)
  • Complete Firefighter I certification (approximately 175 hours) within the first year

Ongoing training ensures compliance with state regulations and department standards while maintaining a high level of proficiency.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Age 18 or older (Junior Program available starting at age 14 with parental consent)
  • Ability to pass a medical evaluation and maintain physical fitness
  • Successful completion of an interview process
  • Willingness to work in high-stress and physically demanding environments

Candidates must also demonstrate strong communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to learn and apply technical firefighting knowledge.

Work Environment and Expectations

Volunteer Firefighters operate in challenging and often hazardous conditions, including exposure to fire, smoke, extreme temperatures, and emotionally stressful situations. Duties may require strenuous physical exertion, working at heights, and responding to emergencies at any time.

Professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to teamwork are essential at all times.

Membership Opportunities

Active Membership
Open to individuals 18 years or older. Applicants must complete required background checks and be approved through the membership process.

Junior Membership
Available for individuals ages 14–17 with parental consent. This program provides an excellent introduction to the fire service.

All applicants are reviewed by the membership committee and must attend a general body meeting for final approval.

Benefits

While volunteer service is unpaid, members receive valuable benefits, including:

  • All training provided at no cost
  • Personal protective equipment and uniforms
  • Accidental death and injury insurance
  • Annual physical examinations
  • Potential Earned Income Tax (EIT) credit for eligible residents

Most importantly, members gain the reward of serving their community and making a meaningful difference.

Join Our Team

The Forks Township Fire Department is comprised of over 50 dedicated volunteers committed to fire suppression, rescue services, and community outreach. No prior experience is required - just a willingness to serve and learn.
